Dead by Design is Book 5 of A Maddie Swallows Mystery series written by Kat Bellemore. This is a great mystery with wonderful characters and storyline. This series keeps getting better! Oh my gosh, there are many humorous interactions between Maddie, her mom, Flash, and Lilly that kept me laughing out loud and bring a lightness to the story. It was extremely enjoyable getting to know Benji in greater detail as he takes on the primary role of clearing his friend of murder charges which ends up having many more sub plots than expected. Of course Maddie and Benji’s relationship is growing and changing which adds another dimension of enjoyment to the story. The town of Amor is in an uproar due to recent influx of developers some shady some not. One in particular has been rather over the top obnoxious and the town wants him gone yesterday. In a case of be careful what you wish for he ends up dead at his building site in an arson scene. When one of Benji’s friends is arrested even though Maddie has sworn to the sheriff she’s not getting involved she can’t let him go it alone. So the whole family mobilizes and starts sleuthing. This one will be a hard case to crack because the most obvious culprits are friends. So will they have to turn in one of their own to save another or is there someone else behind all this trouble? This is a real doozy of a mystery. It’s fun, funny, at times completely wacky and yet still had me scratching my head trying to figure out who done it. Loved the insanity that can only come from a small town and the twist of an ending was fantastic. Love, love, loved the personal development for Benji and Maddie!
